How To Survive Your Family Beach Vacation Road Trip

Sunday, May 30th, 2010

By Marilyn Bohn

I remember driving from Oregon to Utah every summer in a small old car. My mom would pack up the back seat with boxes and suitcases and place on the top a mattress. It must have been a crib size as it was a small 1940′s Ford. That is where I rode during the LONG trip. We would play I spy games, sing and I would chatter until I am sure my mom was anxious for the trip to be at its end. This was before freeways so we traveled through every little poe-dunk town and around every river bend so it took much longer that it does today. But kids still are kids and no matter how far the destination, they want to be there NOW.

As a professional home and office organizer I am always looking for ways to simplify and help the clients I work with. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette had some driving tips that will make the time go faster, well if not faster at least the tips will take some of the pain out of long distant driving with kids in the car.

How to survive your family summer road trip:

o Stop every so often, even if it’s just for a few minutes. Take a jump rope, a Frisbee or a soccer ball for exercise at rest stops. If you don’t have room for these, let them just run around on the grass, but be sure to keep your eye on them.

o Pack a bag or backpack for each child with stickers, cards, books, hand-held games and activity books.

o Pack some special “surprises” for the little kids, and dole them out every so often. It’ll give them something to look forward to.

o A tired kid is a cranky kid. So take pillows and a blanket so they can snooze when they’ve had enough.

o If everyone will be watching the video player (except, of course, the driver), you might consider buying a car cassette adapter that allows for “surround sound”; if not, individual headphones are a good idea. And don’t rule out books on tape. Libraries provide books on tapes. Parents that use a video player love that their kids are entertained and they don’t have to hear them whine and ask, “Are we there yet”.

o Remember the snacks, but avoid anything too salty or sugary. Remember the paper towels and wipes for easy clean up.

The last thing you want to happen is to have the car break down. Make sure your car is road-ready. Check the air in the tires, add wiper fluid, and be sure to have a flashlight and a first-aid kit in with the luggage.

A few weeks before you start to pack make up a packing list and have it on your computer. Everytime you think of something you need to take jot it down. When it is time to pack, print it off and give a copy to each family member that packs for themselves and they can check off each item as they pack it. Save the list for the next time you travel and add to it if you find you forgot something on this trip.

Feel the warm sand beneath your soles, breathe in the crisp air of the sea breeze, and appreciate the romantic view presented by the interesting landscape of an exotic place. No wonder, destination weddings or outdoor weddings are often done by the beach.

A beach wedding reflects much of you and your partner’s personality. You wanted your wedding to be a formal yet informal event. You wanted to make your wedding ceremony formal in the sense that you picked a solemn venue and you wanted to make it informal in sense that you relieve your friends and family of the pressure to wear tux, suit or tie. For the women, you made their pretty beach dresses elegant enough for such a formal event. Now think about your bridesmaid beach dresses. Compared to the usual wedding garb, indulging in a beach dress fashion will be a fun experience for you and your girls.

Take a look at the pictures taken from a beach wedding. Everyone is smiling, everyone is at easy and everyone seems to be enjoying themselves. Now compare that picture to the uptight faces of the bridesmaids and groomsmen that are confined in long gowns and constricting tux. One thing about beach weddings is that it makes everyone at easy and more comfortable to bear with and appreciate the entire wedding ceremony, especially the bridesmaids.

It is the bridesmaids that usually suffer, in great extent, with the wrong fashion choice to complement a wedding theme. While they are the ones who are made to wear such dress, they end up feeling frustrated wearing the wrong color and the wrong cut of clothes. Their disagreement with their clothes will sure show in the pictures. Now, imagine having them to wear fun and flirty beach dresses for their bridesmaid ensemble, which gives more freedom to movement and added comfort.

Anything goes with beach dresses, which is a good thing because you wouldn’t find hard time finding the one that would suit your wedding theme. You can go from simple cuts, flowing knee-length ensembles that does not require the fuss on trains and accessories. With a majestic nature scene at the backdrop, all you have to care about is to be comfortable and bear with the ceremony like you mean it.

Also, with the designs of beach dresses, it allows you to play with your favorite patterns and colors, allowing your bridesmaid dresses to make a unique statement for your wedding theme. Hence, this bridesmaid dress style simply adds a fun and youthful vibe into your wedding day.

Another point about beach dresses for bridesmaids is that they look good on any shape or size of women. Tall or petite, slim to full-figured, beach dresses will celebrate your figure with its youthful and flirty vibe. It is high manageable and comfortable as it is usually made from cotton, silk or rayon. This should keep your girls comfortable and confident about their looks, which sure add to the joy of your wedding day.

Perhaps the best thing about choosing fun beach dresses for your bridesmaids is that you give them a dress that they can wear in time for the summer. Now that is the way to make your dear girl friends happy.

The Summer Style of Hawaiian Shirts

Saturday, May 22nd, 2010

By Daniel Cruse

The days are stretching, becoming longer, shrinking and warming the nights. The dreary days of winter are finally behind us. No more ice hanging from the roof. Pack the snow shovel away, the driveway won’t need cleared for months. The wet afternoons of spring have evaporated in the shining sun. As we put on sunglasses and relish in the warmth we’ve been missing since last September, a new found appreciation swells inside. If we could, we’d hug the sun; thank it for giving us the sunny days and a reason to hit up the pool or beach. The plausibility of doing this is non-existent; we’d burst in the vacuum of outer space and fricassee ourselves on the sun’s surface. But there’s a way to share in the warmth and brightness of the sun: Hawaiian shirts.

Summer Fashion

I mentioned Hawaiian shirts, and you’re thinking, “Dude, I’m not going to a luau.” Maybe you’re not, and perhaps you should reexamine your life. After thorough introspection, if you still feel that there are no luaus on the horizon, don’t dismiss the fashionable quality of Hawaiian shirts. Their bright, tropical designs are an affirmation of the summer sunshine, and are tantamount to fun. I’m not talking about the Hawaiian shirts you’ll find at Target, they lack the dignity that a true tropical shirt aspires to. Authentic island shirts are designed through a process known as Batik.

Batik Designed Hawaiian Shirts

Batik is the ancient art of hand painting fabrics. While its exact origins are unknown, the earliest surviving artifacts of this craft date back 1500 years to Egypt and the Middle East. While batik’s roots can be traced back to the Middle Eastern region of the world; the islands of Indonesia have perfected this delicate art. Batik is a rigorous process that requires patience and a steady hand. Cotton, silk or rayon with a high thread count is used because they absorb the wax best during the dying process. A white cloth is placed on the table, and a stencil is used to create the design. Once the design is drawn, wax is applied to the stenciled design.

The cloth is then placed in a dye bath. The waxed designs stay white. A second application of wax, this time darker, is applied to add color to the design. The cloth is dyed again. The waxed designs are then heated and scraped, removing all the wax but leaving the designs. Two new coats of wax are added for color and defined edges. A third dye bath is given. Afterwards, the wax is again removed. The batik process is complete; the original white cloth has been transformed into a beautiful crafted shirt. If properly cared for, a batik designed Hawaiian shirt will last for years; it’s only threat is an expanding waist line.

Vacation

It’s summer time and open season for family vacation, time to sit by the pool or tan on the beach. What better what to cherish the rays than with a breathable Hawaiian shirt? Bright and bold, it tells the world you’re ready for fun but understand the importance of style. Don’t be worried about designs, with a multitude of hand painted batik styles to choose from, you’ll be ready for any situation. Flower or bamboo forest designed shirts are made for relaxing dinners and late nights. For the days lounging by the ocean, seaweed, turtle or wave designs express the weightlessness of the ocean.

Hawaiian Style

Step into the summer fun with a gorgeous Hawaiian shirt. Enjoy the relaxation and sunshine in style. Tropical styles allow you to be classy and laid back simultaneously; something every man is looking for as they take to the beach or head to the pool. Don’t get left out this summer, find the Hawaiian shirt that’s right for you and get ready for the fun and excitement.

Need to find authentic Hawaiian shirts? Tropical Tantrum has batik hand painted Hawaiian clothing to keep you in style with everything from aloha shirts to Hawaiian wedding dresses in 90 unique patterns.
