How to Have Fun at the Beach With Your Kids!

Friday, August 20th, 2010

By Denise Sanger

Beach Essentials for Kids

Whether you live by the ocean or just take a yearly vacation to the beach, there are some things you should keep in mind as you plan your trip. Most beaches don’t have a store nearby-and you won’t want to leave the surf to go find an item you could have brought from home. Review this list before your next trip, and you’ll be prepared!

1. Sunblock: The sun’s rays bounce off of the surface of the water and the sand, making it more likely that you will get burned. The ocean breeze can make it seem cooler than it is-you may not realize you are getting sunburned until it is too late. Make sure every member of the family wears sunblock, and reapply after swimming or splashing in the ocean.

2. Chairs: Bring a comfortable, low slung beach chair for each adult-kids will prefer sitting on a beach towel, but most grownups prefer using a chair. Look for a chair that folds compactly, or comes with a carry strap for easy handling.

3. Backpack: Pack a single backpack or bag with your essentials-if you keep everything together, you will only have one bag to keep track of. Avoid bringing your purse or wallet to the beach-lock them in your car instead.

4. Change of clothing: Bring a dry set of clothing for each member of your party. The ride home will be much more comfortable if you change into dry clothes-a wet, sandy swimsuit can be very itchy to wear, and make even a short car trip uncomfortable. Most beaches have restrooms and changing facilities and you will appreciate the fresh clothing after a busy day in the waves.

5. Wet washcloth in a baggie: Place a soaking wet washcloth in a ziplock baggie, and add it to your backpack. Someone will inevitably get sand, saltwater, or sunblock in their eyes and you can use a damp washcloth to ease the sting. You can also use this to wash hands before eating or drinking.

6. Sand Toys: A bucket and shovel are the bare minimum here. Look for a set that comes with a variety of shapes for molding sand, and have one of the kids carry it!

7. Snack or lunch: Depending on the beach you are going to, there may not be food facilities nearby. Most beaches in the Southeast are boardwalk-free, so you will have to either bring lunch, or leave the beach to find something to eat.

8. Bottled water: It is easy to become dehydrated while you frolic in the waves-partially freeze a few bottles of water and add them to your backpack, and you will have access to fresh, cool water without leaving the beach.

9. Shoes: Make sure every member of your party is wearing shoes. Sand can get extremely hot by mid afternoon, and you may have to walk a bit to find the perfect spot to set up. Wearing shoes (flip flops or crocs are ideal) also protects your feet from broken shells and other debris.

10. Waterproof camera: Pack an inexpensive, throwaway camera for your trip, and leave the pricey photo gear at home. Small particles of sand could work their way into your camera, and damage its delicate parts. Bring along a cheap waterproof version instead, and snap your photos worry-free.

One of the best things you can do for your trip is plan ahead. If you haven’t visited this particular beach before, call ahead and check on parking, restroom facilities, and other important information before you arrive. By planning ahead, and packing the essentials, you can focus on fun, and enjoy your day at the beach!

Fun on the Beach

Monday, August 16th, 2010

By April Boone

Remember the last time you buried your toes in sugar-white sand, or dipped your hands into Gulf waters to cool your face and neck? Have you taken the opportunity lately to sling on sandals, to sip sauvignon on the deck of an open-air restaurant and watch silently as a heron fishes nearby for his dinner? Picture the routine of your days slowly slipping away as you step into a vacation filled with spontaneity, as you don cleats to pace off your ball on lush golf greens, or lace on sturdy shoes with good traction as you board a boat for deep-sea fishing.

Treat yourself to a splendid sun-filled, gulf-gazing getaway in Gulf Shores / Orange Beach, on Alabama’s Gulf Coast. Relax on beaches that suit your style, whether you need handicap access, concessions, bathrooms with showers, and up-close parking, or natural, secluded space to doze between the dunes. Or choose a location close to volleyball and beach bars, with picnicking in mind. What’s your mood? There are miles and miles of white sand contrasting with vivid turquoise waters awaiting your leisure.

And when those sparkling waves beckon, getting in the water is a breeze. Of course, you’ve got the traditional, putting-toes-in-water means covered — but what if you’d rather feel the wind in your hair, leave a trail of spray in your wake, discover what’s underwater, or fly above the waves? You can rent equipment to take in some scuba diving, reserve a pontoon, a kayak, a hobie cat, a waverunner. Or, better yet, hire on a captain and leave the steering to someone else while you enjoy the feel of wind and water, keeping a keen eye out for dolphins playing in the nearby waves. And if you just aren’t getting enough air, you can try parasailing! There are opportunities for being in the water, under the water, on the water, or above the water in Gulf Shores / Orange Beach.

When the sun goes down, dust off the sand and salt and take a seat in one of the area’s restaurants to enjoy succulent Gulf shrimp, freshly shucked oysters on the half shell, wood-smoked portabella mushrooms. Whatever cuisine or atmosphere you fancy, from barefoot bar to hole-in-the-wall to freshly starched linen and fine dining, there’s a dish and a dining style suited just for you, and you can find it online at http://www.thebeachiscalling.org.

Nightlife on the beach can take the form of a romantic walk along the shore with a sweetie, dancing with the locals at an area beach bar, listening to live bands and sipping fruity cocktails, or relaxing on a moonlight cruise.

Gulf Shores / Orange Beach is the perfect spot for family fun, too, with recreational activities that include a waterpark, zoo, miniature golf, and the Southeast’s tallest Ferris wheel, to name a few. You can go horse-back riding, hike the nature trails to spot local wildlife, zoom around a go-kart track, or simply build towering sandcastles near the ever-beckoning shore.

The opportunities for beach fun are available by checking out http://www.thebeachiscalling.org. Where will your feet take you? Fun is so close, as close as a trip to Alabama’s unforgettable Gulf Coast. The beach is calling. Are you listening?

How To Run On The Beach

Thursday, August 12th, 2010

By Blaine Moore

One of my readers recently emailed me and asked, “What do I need to know about running on the beach? I’m new to it and I ran barefoot today, and I really enjoyed it. I’m worried about hurting myself, though, so is running with or without shoes best?”

My opportunities for running on the beach are few and far between these days, but when I was in college I used to get some quality runs in on the sand. My team would go down to the Daytona Beach area in February before track season every year, and I spent a year living in central Florida and would head into Daytona on the weekends fairly frequently.

My favorite run during pre-season was always the beach run. We would get dropped off at the north end of the beach, and then our ride would drive 15 miles down the road and buy a bunch of donuts and bagels for us and fill up the water jugs and mix up some Gatorade. Most of us would arrive within an hour and a half to two hours, and we’d play around in the ocean before heading back to our camp for some more substantial food.

Any time that you are going to run on the beach, with or without shoes, you might want to bear the following in mind:

  • You will probably want to run in the morning, especially if it is warm enough to swim afterwards. The sun can be brutal as it reflects off of the water.
  • Wear a lot of layers if it is cold, because the wind off of the ocean can be brutal in the Winter.
  • You will want to wear plenty of sunscreen no matter the weather.
  • Run at low tide just above the water. The land will (usually) not be sloped quite as much, and the water that has been absorbed by the sand will compact it into something that is a little easier to run on.
  • Carry water with you or make frequent stops at water fountains.

Running in the sand can make you very strong, especially if you are running above the water line where your feet will sink into the sand. Just be careful if there angle of the beach is really severe, though, because this can put a huge strain on your knees and ankles. Your pace is going to be slower on the beach than it will be on roads, so plan accordingly and make sure that you have plenty of water available.

If you are going to run barefoot, then ease into it gradually. Barefoot running in general and on sand specifically is a great way to build up strength and a resistance to injury, but because we begin wearing shoes at such a young age these days our feet are not nearly as strong as they could be. You can easily injure yourself if you start running barefoot too fast or too often before you have built up some strength. Also be careful where you step, because broken glass and sea shells are no fun to step on.

If you are going to be racing on the roads, especially a long race such as a half marathon or a marathon, then you are going to want to get in at least a few road miles. If you are running exclusively on the beach, then your legs are really not going to appreciate the additional pounding that they take when you get around to your first long road race.
