Since most beaches are unsupervised, it is important that you know when conditions are safe for you and when they are not. One of the most dangerous things on the beach is a rip. This is a leading cause of drownings on beaches, but it is also something that many surfers use to get them out the back of the waves more quickly and easily.
A rip is a current of water that sucks water back out to sea after it has broken on the beach. You can usually spot a rip when you are surveying the beach because it will be an area where there are no waves beside where other waves are breaking. The water in a rip sometimes looks darker because the area is deeper and at times the water may be brown from mixing with sand. Swimmers should try to stay away from them, but surfers can use them very effectively.
There are some basic skills you need to master in order to become a decent surfer. To get onto a wave you need to be able to paddle fast and strong, but before that you need to get out behind the breaking waves. To do this you will need to use an Eskimo roll or duck dive under a wave to pass through the waves. Eskimo rolls are used on bigger waves or for less experienced surfers who have not yet mastered duck diving.
There are some basic skills that you will have to develop in order to be able to surf and find it enjoyable rather than frustrating. Some of these skills include paddling, catching waves and then standing up smoothly on the board. Directing the board comes later when you have the basics down pat.
